Naughty Dog Confirms Two New The Last of Us Projects and a New Uncharted Game Rumor, Explained

Launch story cover

Big week for Naughty Dog fans, it's a mix of official news and loud rumors. Studio head Neil Druckmann has confirmed two new The Last of Us projects are in the works, while reports of a brand-new Uncharted game keep piling up. Here's what's actually confirmed, what's still just a rumor, and why you should pump the brakes on celebrating a The Last of Us Part III announcement just yet.

The confirmed part: two new The Last of Us projects

In Naughty Dog's blog post closing out The Last of Us Day on September 26, 2026, Druckmann confirmed the studio has two new The Last of Us projects in very early stages. Both, he said, will expand the canon beyond the stories of Part I and Part II.

But here's the important part: neither project has been identified as The Last of Us Part III and neither has even been confirmed as a game as such. As Game Informer noted in its coverage, the studio's wording leaves exactly what these projects are wide open. They could be games, or they could be something else entirely in the franchise's expanding universe. The actual confirmation here is that The Last of Us will continue not what it looks like.

Intergalactic stays the studio's focus

Druckmann also reiterated that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet remains Naughty Dog's priority. The full reveal is planned for 2027, and the game will stay dark for the rest of 2026 because it "needs a little more time to cook," in his words.

The Uncharted rumor: what's actually being reported

Separately, MP1st reported on September 30, citing unnamed sources, that a brand-new Uncharted game, not a remake, is in development at Naughty Dog, reportedly directed by Shaun Escayg, the director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The same report says Nathan Drake appears "in some form" and that the game would follow Intergalactic.

VGC's follow-up reporting on October 1 partially corroborated the story through its own sources: the next game after Intergalactic, Escayg directing, and a cast that could include an older Nathan Drake and his daughter Cassie. (VGC's own headline used "Uncharted 5," though no official title exists.) Leaker NateTheHate, whose track record includes the Switch 2 reveal then said that yes, "a new Uncharted" is what he'd been hinting at.

What is NOT confirmed

As of October 3, 2026, Naughty Dog and Sony have not commented on any of it, no official acknowledgment, no title, no platform, no release window. And one piece of the original report should not be repeated as fact: the claim that The Last of Us Part III would come after Uncharted. NateTheHate explicitly said he knows nothing about the future TLOU projects, so that sequencing is not corroborated at all.

What to make of all this

The story here is the pattern, not any single announcement. Naughty Dog is officially signaling that both of its biggest franchises have more chapters to come, with Intergalactic the one thing we know arrives next its full reveal, in 2027. Everything else, the two TLOU projects, the new Uncharted game is either very early-stage or completely unconfirmed. Sorry, Part III hopefuls: that announcement is not here yet.
