Sony Now Requires PS5 Firmware 14.10 to Sign In to PSN

Sony now requires PlayStation 5 firmware version 14.10 to sign in to PlayStation Network. Consoles still on firmware 14.00, the last version where the two publicly discussed exploits were shown to work can no longer connect to a PSN account unless they update.
The change was reported on October 15, 2026 by Notebookcheck, which cites a PS5homebrew subreddit thread showing a console on firmware 14.00 failing to connect to a PSN account. Sony has not publicly commented on the change. The requirement is tied to firmware version, not to individual accounts.

What Modified PS5 Owners Lose
According to the report, an un-updated console loses more than online multiplayer. Without PSN connectivity, the console is limited to offline capabilities, and the reported consequences stack up:
Multiplayer in PS4 and PS5 games is often crippled.
Digital licenses may fail verification, and some titles may not load at all.
The PlayStation Store is off-limits.
The trade-off runs both ways. Installing the update restores PSN access but removes the firmware version the two exploits were shown to work on.
PS5 Firmware 14.10 and the Exploits Behind the Timeline
The report points to two exploits behind the timeline. The Relapse jailbreak, modified for firmware 13.60, provides kernel read and write access. Byepervisor Reborn is a hypervisor bypass. Both ran successfully up to firmware 14.00. According to the report, such exploits allow homebrew apps, unofficial software, and game backups, which the report links to piracy.
Firmware 14.00 arrived on September 16, 2026. Firmware 14.10 followed on October 1, 2026, and its stated changelog covers security fixes plus performance and stability improvements.
The report also notes that requiring updates for PSN access is not new. It adds that the Overdrive homebrew app reportedly disappeared, which the report treats as suspicion that Sony Interactive Entertainment sent a cease-and-desist, not a confirmed action.
What Is Not Confirmed
Sony has not publicly explained the change, and the report does not establish why the restriction landed when it did. The timing does not establish that Sony acted because of any specific homebrew, emulation, or recompilation project.
Separately, TweakTown reported that the PS5 version of GTA 6 will require firmware 14.10 or newer, attributing the claim to PlayStation Game Size on X. Neither Rockstar nor Sony has confirmed it.
What Affected Owners Can Do
Owners who want to keep PSN access need to update to the latest firmware. Owners who stay on firmware 14.00 keep offline use only and, as the report describes it, wait for exploits that work on newer firmware.
